Used to Call Home is an experiential project culminating in a family-style photo and poetry book. Born in California but moving out of state at three, the concept of "home" was never tied to one location. Despite hearing that California was my true "home", the reality felt different. For this project, I revisited places I once called home. After 19 years away, I documented what I saw, capturing the changes and memories that shaped my understanding of a "home".

About

Guided only by family descriptions and old home videos, I revisited familiar locations, comparing my childhood memories with their present reality through straightforward, free-verse poetry. The poetry reflects my recollections, while the photographs capture the current state of these places. Photographing them as they are now, I felt a bittersweet mix of emotions, recalling the joy these locations once held for me. The transformation was striking—neighborhoods with political banners, decaying playgrounds, littered streets, and eroding boulders, all spoke to the passage of time and the shifting nature of 'home.'

The most memorable experience was revising the Rock Path, where I once played 'House' with friends. The boulders, once large and jagged, perfect for imagining rooms, had been worn down over time. Now smaller, rounder, and smoothed by the wind, the area was littered with trash. The place was not as I had remembered.
